Las Vegas

Las Vegas transforms your round into a team battle where math skills matter as much as golf skills. Partners' scores are combined into two-digit numbers, and the team with the lower number wins points equal to the difference. Birdies can flip your opponents' digits for massive swings.

How to Play

1. Form Teams

Split into two teams of two before teeing off. Partnerships stay the same throughout the round (or switch at the turn if desired).

2. Play Each Hole

All four players play stroke play. Record each individual score.

3. Create Team Numbers

After completing the hole, combine each team's scores into a two-digit number by placing the lower score first.

Example:

  • Team 1: Player A scores 5, Player B scores 4 → Team number = 45
  • Team 2: Player C scores 4, Player D scores 6 → Team number = 46

4. Calculate Points

The difference between team numbers is the point value.

  • Lower number wins
  • Points = Difference between team numbers
  • In the example: Team 1 wins 1 point (46 - 45)

Pairing Rules

Standard Scores (Under 10)

Lower score goes first

  • Scores of 4 and 6 = 46
  • Scores of 5 and 3 = 35

Double-Digit Scores (10+)

Higher score goes first (penalty for blow-up holes)

  • Scores of 7 and 10 = 107
  • Scores of 11 and 6 = 116

The Birdie Flip ("Flip the Bird")

When one team makes a birdie, their opponents' team number gets flipped (digits reversed). This rule creates explosive swings and makes birdies incredibly valuable.

Birdie Flip Example

  • Team 1 scores: 3 and 5 = 35 (Team 1 made birdie)
  • Team 2 scores: 4 and 5 = 45
  • Team 2's number flips to 54
  • Team 1 wins 19 points (54 - 35)

Scoring Calculations

The point difference is always the absolute value of the team numbers:

34 vs 45 = 11 points
56 vs 47 = 9 points
35 vs 107 = 72 points (ouch!)

Tied Holes: If both teams post the same number, the hole "pushes" and no points are awarded.

Betting & Stakes

Per Point Method (Recommended)

Set a value per point (e.g., $0.25/point given the potential for large swings). Track cumulative points through the round and settle based on final point differential.

Settlement Example

After 18 holes, Team 1 has 85 points, Team 2 has 120 points

Difference: 35 points at $0.25 = $8.75 per player

  • Team 2 wins, each member receives $8.75
  • Team 1 loses, each member pays $8.75

Recommended Stakes

  • Conservative: $0.10 - $0.25 per point
  • Moderate: $0.50 - $1.00 per point
  • Aggressive: $1+ per point

Variations & Strategy

Popular Variations

  • Switch Partners at the Turn: Keeps things fresh if one team is dominating
  • Presses: Add side bets when teams fall behind by a certain margin
  • Carry Points: Some groups carry tied holes forward to the next hole
  • Nassau Format: Play front 9, back 9, and overall as three separate matches

Strategic Considerations

  • Scramble Mentality: One great shot per team is crucial—you only need one birdie look
  • Avoid Disasters: Double bogeys create massive numbers; play conservatively if your partner struggles
  • Birdie Aggression: The flip rule means birdies are worth far more than in regular golf—take risks on birdie putts
  • Partner Communication: Knowing your partner's lie helps decide when to play safe vs. aggressive
